Bills and coins replaced by the Euro

1999 saw an unprecedented development in the creation of the Eurozone, a collection of countries which formed the European Monetary Union (EMU). These countries agreed to replace their currencies with the Euro, issued by the European Central Bank. With two series of notes currently in circulation, the Euro is legal tender not only in the Eurozone countries, but in Kosovo and Montenegro as well. The first series of Euro banknotes were issued in 2002, and the second in 2013.

Below is a list of national currencies which were replaced by the Euro. Though the bills and coins of these currencies are no longer in circulation, we can still exchange them for you.

Austria: Austrian schilling, Belgium: Belgian franc, Cyprus: Cypriot pound, Estonia: Estonian kroon, Finland: Finnish markka, France: French franc, Germany: German mark, Greece: Greek drachma, Ireland: Irish pound, Italy: Italian lira, Luxembourg: Luxembourg franc, Malta: Maltese lira, Netherlands: Dutch guilder, Portugal: Portuguese escudo, SlovakiaSlovak crown, Slovenia: Slovenian tolar, Spain: Spanish peseta.

The Euro is also used by countries outside of the Eurozone, including Andorra, Kosovo, Montenegro, Monaco, San Marino, the Vatican, and Northern Cyprus. It is also the legal tender in territories which belong to European Union countries, such as the Azores, the Canary Islands, Ceuta, French Guiana, the French Southern and Antarctic Territories, Guadeloupe, Madeira, Martinique, Mayotte, Melilla, Reunion, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin, and Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.
